Overview of skin composition

To better understand how Thermage Skin Tightening® works, it is helpful to understand the structure of the skin. Skin is made up of three distinct layers:

  • A visible outer layer called the epidermis
  • A collagen-rich under layer called the dermis
  • An inner layer beneath the dermis called the subcutaneous layer also known as the fat layer. A web of collagen fibers runs through the fat layer

When the collagen in these three layers breaks down due to sun exposure, family heredity, or the normal aging process, your skin begins to sag and wrinkle. Thermage® is the

only non-invasive procedure available that tightens and renews your skin’s collagen in all three layers. The heat energy that is delivered into the tissue, allows the collagen fibers to contract. This collagen denaturing process spurs new collagen growth in the area. Once new collagen has been grown, those fibers contract further, and even more skin tightening is seen. This process lasts for about 6-9 months post procedure, and then has a lasting effect of up to 5 years.

Is it safe?

Thermage uses Monopolar Radiofrequency (CRF) technology to safely heat your skin’s dermis and the web of collagen in the fat layer. Thermage Skin Tightening® offers many of the same benefits of traditional surgical procedures, but Thermage Skin Tightening is not surgery. No incisions are made, and there is no scarring or lasting damage to the skin.
